Dear Kevin,
Welcome to Updater, the official newsletter of WSMA. Receiving this essential information is just one of the many WSMA membership benefits. Important electronic updates are sent regularly throughout the academic year, so please be sure WSMA has your current email address.
It's High School State Honors Time!
by Linda Petersen, WSMA Director of Programs
The leaves and temperatures are falling, which means now is the time to register online for one of the best experiences available for talented high school musicians - the WSMA State Honors Music Project!
What's New With High School State Honors

  • School music teachers must sign every application/invoice before it is mailed. Your signature verifies the student meets eligibility requirements (your school is a current WSMA member, and the student is registered and regularly performs in the corresponding music ensemble(s) for which he/she is auditioning), and has your endorsement to audition for the High School State Honors Music Project.

  • Full payment, not purchase orders, must be sent with the invoices, or the invoices will be returned to you. Clearly inform your school business officials of the December 8, 2006 deadline.

2007 High School State Honors Conductors

The Wisconsin State Honors Music Project offers talented youth the opportunity to rehearse and perform with nationally-known conductors in a professional setting. Meet the 2007 conductors!
Apply Now for High School State Honors
  Deadline is 11 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006
To complete the online application process, you'll need your students' personal contact information, their email address, voice/instrument, and audition date and location preference. Auditions take place on Saturday, Feb. 3 at UW-Eau Claire, Waukesha West HS, and Appleton East HS, or on Saturday, Feb. 10 at UW-Stevens Point, UW-La Crosse, Middleton HS and Milwaukee Rufus King HS. Remember to print and mail the invoice with $17.00 payment for each audition.
Honors Endowment Plan

Did you hear about the State Honors Endowment Plan at this year's Honors concerts? The goal is to endow every chair in the WSMA Middle Level and High School State Honors Music Projects, and endow every conductor chair. This campaign is off to a roaring start!
WSMA Festival Updates
by Jeff Gretzinger, WSMA Program Manager
2006-2007 rules changes and reminders may be reviewed in your WSMA Handbook, or online. Additional Pre-Approved Permissions, revised clinic festival registration and expanded festival opportunities highlight the rules changes. Festival questions can be directed to Jeff Gretzinger or Richard Fellenz via email or by calling the WSMA office at 1-800-589-9762 or 608-850-3566.

WSMA Festivals data entry via Teacher Online Data Entry (TOLDE) continues to assist teachers in entering their festival information. Access to TOLDE is only available through the Members Only section. January and February festivals will be available beginning December 1. Data entry for all other festivals may begin by January 2, 2007. Remember your WSMA School code (2) and password (wsmamember) to gain access to the Members Only area. Complete TOLDE instructions are available there.

Rubric evaluation forms are in their first year of use at all clinic and concert festivals. Many directors utilizing the rubric forms pre-festival are finding their ensembles better prepared for the festival experience. "Comment Only" forms containing all criteria are available for download from the Members Only section.

2006 Thanksgiving Day Radio Broadcast Schedule

Take a break again this year from Thanksgiving Day food, frenzy and football, and turn on Wisconsin Public Radio. You'll hear WPR's wonderful tradition of broadcasting the WSMA High School State Honors Orchestra, Band, Treble Choir and Mixed Choir concert performances on Thanksgiving Day. Take a look at the tentative concert broadcast times and a list of stations in your area.
Wisconsin Center for Music Education
  Upcoming Workshops
The Wisconsin Center for Music Education, located in Waunakee (just north of Madison), is offering a variety of professional development workshops (including followup workshops to Wisconsin State Music Conference sessions -- previous conference attendance not necessary) with graduate credit available and community education programs. Be sure to click on the above links for intriguing details and register early because seating is limited!
Launchpad

The Wisconsin Foundation for School Music is once again calling on music teachers to encourage bands formed outside the classroom to apply for Launchpad -- the statewide alternative music competition for high school students. Help celebrate the reach of music education with Launchpad.
Important Dates

Festival dates and locations are listed on the WSMA web site along with festival manager contact information. Keep your calendar current with our online schedule of additional dates for WSMA programs and services. Be sure to visit often for updates!
