2010 WSMA/DPI Student Composition Project Results

WSMA and DPI are proud to announce the results of the 2010 Student Composition Project. The compositions submitted demonstrated the musical talent of Wisconsin's students and the strong leadership of its' teachers. Each composition was evaluated on melody, rhythm, harmony, form, creativity and general effect, and awards are given solely based on merit.

AWARD WINNERS
The following students will receive a plaque at the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Conference held in October, recognizing their outstanding achievement. Additionally, each division winner will receive a scholarship to study with a professional composer.

MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION AWARD WINNERS (Grades 5 - 8)

*Indicates division winner.
  • Alicia Mose from Fox Valley Lutheran Middle School won Best Instrumental Ensemble award for Unpopular Spring Crayons. James Neujahr is Alicia's music teacher.
  • Joe Meinholz from River Valley Middle School received Second Place in the Instrumental Ensemble category for his composition, Frozen Flames. Joe's music teacher is Tony Cavagnetto.
  • *Patrick McNamara from Onalaska Luther Middle School is the Middle School Division Winner for his composition, Midnight Mist,which also was named Best Instrumental Solo. In addition to a plaque, Patrick will receive a scholarship to study one-on-one with a Wisconsin composer. Nate Amundson is Patrick's music teacher.
  • Tedd Wright from De Long Middle School won Second Place in the Instrumental Solo category for Suspicions. Dennis Luginbill is Tedd's music teacher.
  • Tanner Nielsen from Luck Junior High School won Third Place in the Instrumental Solo category for Piano Battle. Jennifer Gilhoi is Tanner's music teacher.
  • Stone Wang from Whitewater Middle School won Best Collaborative Ensemble award for Ocean. Christine Hayes is Stone's music teacher.
 

HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION AWARD WINNERS (Grades 9 - 12)

  • *Sean Hussey from Appleton West High School is the High School Division Winner for his composition, Introduction from The Tale of Dmitri Ickutt, which was also named Best Instrumental Solo. In addition to a plaque, Sean will receive a scholarship to study one-on-one with a Wisconsin composer. Sean's music teacher is Kevin Meidl.
  • Robert Harlow from Barneveld High School received Second Place in the Instrumental Solo category for his composition, Air Raid Pearl Harbor, This is Not a Drill. Aaron Cooley is Robert's music teacher.
  • Gregory Hartmann from Eisenhower High School won Third Place in the Instrumental Solo category for his composition, Ballade No. 1. Gregory's music teacher is Kay Black.
  • Trae Titus from Sun Prairie High School won Second Place in the Instrumental Ensemble category for his composition, Undecided. Chad Whalley is Trae's music teacher.
  • Matthew Betz from Clintonville High School won Best Instrumental Ensemble for his composition, Paperclip. Dan Schmidt is Matthew's music teacher.
  • Kyle Picha from Prairie du Chien High School won Third Place in the Instrumental Ensemble category for his composition, Saga of the Sun. Philip Stiemke is Kyle's music teacher.
  • Nick Connors from Kimberly High School won Best Vocal Solo for his composition, The Journey Onwards. Luke Zaccaro is Nick's music teacher.
  • Graycen Gardner from Homestead High School won Best Vocal Ensemble for Invocation. Rebecca Winnie is Graycen's music teacher.
  • Alaric Coussons from Academy of the Fox Cities won Second Place in the Vocal Ensemble for Pyramus and Thisbe. Erin Krebs is Alaric's music teacher.
  • Zachary Moore from Muskego High School won Third Place in the Vocal Ensemble for Revelation. Matthew Wanner is Zachary's music teacher.
