• WSMA Festival Music List

Wisconsin School Music Association offers a music list of more than 6,000 carefully selected titles to promote musical growth through practice, performance, and evaluation at WSMA-sanctioned music festivals. Each year, more than 220,000 students take the initiative to participate in WSMA festivals, and use the music from the WSMA Festival Music List. Wisconsin teachers annually volunteer many hours to review and recommend music for this list. If you are interested in being a music list reviewer, please email your name, major instrument/voice to Theresa McKinley or Linda Meier.

General Rules that Apply to All Solo & Ensemble Festival Events:

(from the WSMA Festival Rules, Section VI)
-  A student may not enter the same event more than once unless the event is specified as an exception in rule VI.B.

- Play two contrasting movements on all multi-movement selections unless other instructions are specified.

- If the length of a selection exceeds 3/4 of the allotted time, the music may be cut to stay within the time limit.

- An accompanist must not exceed 15 accompaniments for any WSMA festival.  Use synthesized, prerecorded, and/or computer software programs when accompanists are difficult to find.

- The soloist/a member of the ensemble is expected to introduce the performance at WSMA District and State Festivals, including performer and accompanist names, name of school, title and composer of piece (and if appropriate, movements being performed), and briefly describe a significant aspect of style, form, technique, harmony, rhythm, or melody in the piece.

The music will go through two rounds of evaluations, with the first round of evaluations
taking place in early fall the year prior to the list being published (so music for the
2015-2016 Festival Music List will first be evaluated in Aug/Sept of 2014.)
We recommend that music be sent to WSMA no later than July 31st.
